The Delta Eta Chapter of Pi Kappa Phi actively participates in local philanthropies across the community,
but the core and center of this chapter is volunteering at the Horizon Village in Morehead, KY.
Above are a few pictures of us serving and volunteering with the residents at Horizon, supporting Journey of Hope riders, and hosting multiple events in support of our Horizon Village friends and for the Ability Experience.

What makes our fraternity the best on this campus and the nation, as well as makes our brotherhood stronger, is the smiling faces of the Horizon Village residence every week. Every Thursday, the brothers of Delta Eta set out to Horizon Village, where we spend time with the residents, playing boardgames, singing karaoke, playing sports outside, talking and listen to stories from these wonderful people, and most importantly: love and care for them not because we have to, but because it is what we want to do.
Delta Eta Brothers can attest to this; the biggest and best moments in college are when the people you give yourself to have a big smile on their faces, a giant hug to offer you whenever they see you, and a heart full of love just eagerly awaiting for you to overfill it. |
We don't just change lives at Horizon -
Horizon changes our lives, Forever.
The men of Delta Eta not only volunteer at Horizon Village and other organizations across Morehead. We also put on revenue-generating philanthropy events that go straight to our national philanthropy, The Ability Experience. Every fall we have our annual War Of The Roses, a week long philanthropy event, and in the spring a 24 hour long Bike-A-Thon. We also put on several events across campus like pie a pi kapp, selling roses for valentines day, selling raffle for baskets, ect.
Nationally, our philanthropy is known as "The Ability Experience", formally known as "PUSH America".
Over the course of The Ability Experience’s history, the way the organization achieves its mission has changed often without ever forgetting its roots. When it was founded, The Ability Experience was based on the construction of play units for children with disabilities. It was only a matter of years before construction was no longer the sole focal point of the organization.
Cycling was introduced 10 years into the organization’s history with Journey of Hope, a cross-country cycling event, followed by Gear Up Florida, a similar event across the state. With the addition of Build America a few years later, cycling and construction truly began working hand-in-hand to change the lives of people with disabilities. Currently, The Ability Experience still utilizes construction and cycling as main vehicles for impact, but has also added The Ability Experience Challenges, events not restricted to only members of Pi Kappa Phi focused on pushing the limits of human ability. More than any one event, though, is the idea of service leadership. The goal of each and every Ability Experience program is to give of one’s self in order to benefit people with disabilities, instilling a lifelong commitment to service. The Ability Experience, formerly Push America, is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that serves people with disabilities. The Ability Experience was founded in 1977 as the national philanthropy of Pi Kappa Phi Fraternity with the purpose of instilling lifelong service in its members and enhancing the quality of life for people with disabilities. Although the organization is still fulfilling the purpose for which it was intended, The Ability Experience has grown into a nationally recognized nonprofit with numerous programs educating undergraduates, alumni and communities about the abilities of people with disabilities.
The Ability Experience’s mission is, “We use shared experiences to support people with disabilities and develop the men of Pi Kappa Phi into servant leaders.” which has been fulfilled for more than 35 years. Although the wording may have been changed, The Ability Experience’s vision to “Create a community, one relationship at a time, where the abilities of all people are recognized and valued,” remains unchanged. Through programs of all kinds, participants display The Ability Experience’s four core values (abilities, teamwork, empathy and integrity) while serving others. Although the funds raised are invaluable, just as important is an increased awareness of the amazing things people with disabilities can do, as opposed to focusing on what they can’t.
